On a brutal course Todd was doing well — 10th after the dressage and second in the steeplechase — until his horse, Tophunter, broke down during the cross-country stage. That championship opened Todd's eyes to international three-day eventing. He juggled his finances, sometimes having to sell his horses, and had a crack at Badminton in Todd has won at the Badminton Horse Trials an impressive four times.

In , he won his first-ever Badminton aboard his horse Southern Comfort. At the time, he was just 24 years old and a rising star in eventing. He won the Badminton Horse Trials a total of four times, , , , and Though he is most famous for being an eventer, he also went on to compete in show jumping at the Olympics. In addition to competing in eventing, he also competed in show jumping as well at the and Olympics.

In , he had the honor of being the flag bearer for New Zealand. There is no doubt about it that Todd has top-notch horsemanship skills. His skills particularly shined through at Badminton in , when he catch rode a horse to victory. Won gold again at the Seoul Olympics in Charisma was then 16 years old, and was retired after the Games. In , at the Barcelona Olympics, he won team silver.

He was unable to compete in the Olympics at Atlanta because of an injury to his horse.
